Still They Pray

wulfmusik For those who dismiss certain music as "Satanic," I would guide them to Cough as a musical study into why people might turn to Satan when the rest of the world has decimated them. This music empathizes with an extremely dark, but very real mood, in a powerfully evocative manner. Not for the faint of heart. This album is a welcome and deeper development of Cough's range -- the hate and anger are often bubbling with underlying, more raw feelings; or evolve into something much worse. . . Favorite track: Still They Pray.

Master of Alchemy 1-4 are solid Cough. There is a change of tone with Let it Bleed; the song really resonated, in a similar way to Machine Head's song The Burning Red. Shadow of the Torturer is another change of tone and style; an instrumental, the first 4 minutes is very much a stoner vibe. The Wounded Hours is the first time I have heard a Hammond Organ used in Doom; it is a very natural combination. Finale with the acoustic Still They Prey. I salute Cough for having personal integrity, the results are awesome. Favorite track: The Wounding Hours.

comaunite Some of the better and quality doom. Great tones, heavy slow AF riffs and that organ is just awesome. The whole thing has kind of a Windhandy vibe, while not being a rip-off or anything. Sadly, the vox aren't the strong part in this. Favorite track: The Wounding Hours.

COUGH return with their first album in over five years. Produced by Electric Wizard’s Jus Oborn and recorded by Oborn and Windhand’s Garrett Morris, 'Still They Pray' is the kind of monolithic cosmic doom that will take the listener to the heights of despair and the bottom of the abyss. With 'Still They Pray', COUGH summon psychedelic feedback-driven melodies just to deconstruct them to their core. This is easily COUGH at their most focused: pessimistic riffs and tortured grooves collide in melodic agony alongside a hallucinogenic blend of harsh and clean incantations, crushing and cathartic yet utterly mesmerizing. Step through the gates of madness and stare into the void.
